Initiatives and Compliance
As you can see from our Quality Policy Statement above, Samtec is an environmentally conscious company committed to staying aligned with the environmental directives and “green” policies being implemented worldwide. This includes the expanding lead-free initiative, the European ELV Legislation, the WEEE Directive, the RoHS Directive, as well as many other forth-coming global environmental policies.
The majority of Samtec products are compliant with the EU WEEE and RoHS Directives as they are currently written.
WEEE Requirements
The Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE - 2002/96/EG) came into force throughout Europe on 13 August 2005 and was amended by the recast Directive 2012/19/EU. The purpose of this Directive is to prevent uncontrolled disposal of WEEE and to put it to good use, recycling or other form of recovery. In the following, SAMTEC Inc. explains the recycling solution based on this WEEE directive.
For more information about the WEEE Directive, see the following link: EC Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (European Commission)
According to this directive, SAMTEC products are considered B2B products and are subsequently labelled in accordance with the WEEE directive. The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol is placed on all products that must be disposed of in accordance with this directive.
If you find the crossed-out wheeled bin on a product (its labeling or its packaging) that you have purchased from Samtec; take note of the information detailed in the document titled “Samtec WEEE Requirements and Take Back Scheme” (linked below) when disposing of the product.

MSDS Reports
Please be advised that according to The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, Samtec Products are, by definition, an article. Samtec products are not hazardous or toxic under conditions of normal use.
As defined under OSHA HCS 29 CFR 1910.1200, “article” means:
- A manufactured item which is formed to specific shape or design during manufacture.
- A manufactured item which has end-use functions dependent in whole or in part upon its shape or design during end-use functions.
- A manufactured item which does not release, or otherwise result in exposure to a hazardous chemical under normal use.
Samtec products do not involve any exposure to hazardous materials under normal use and based on the HCS definitions of 29 CFR 1910.1200, no MSDS is required.
Part specific material declarations of Samtec products are available on request (a valid Samtec part number is required to obtain a Material Declaration). For more information on MSDS Reports, contact our General Technical Support Group.
Recommended Storage Conditions
The intent of this recommendation is to ensure Samtec’s global customers experience the highest quality and reliability with our wide array of products. Samtec recommends that customers use well-controlled climatic storage conditions (Controlled Storage Room or CSR), as defined in IEC 60721-3-1 (classification 1K20), unless otherwise specified by Samtec. Those CSR conditions are as follows:
Temperature Range: 20–25°C
Relative Humidity Range: 20–75%
Tin plated components maximum storage at recommended CSR conditions is 12 months. Gold plated components maximum storage at recommended CSR conditions is 18 months. Samtec recommends that components stored beyond these durations or outside the recommended CSR conditions should be tested for solderability per IPC/EIA/JEDEC J-STD-002E Category 1 prior to introduction to production processing.
It should be noted that the above information applies to the vast majority of Samtec products which are:
- Electrically-passive components
- Non-moisture-sensitive devices
- Dry-pack packaging is not required
